About Champlab

What this site is, who builds it, and how the data is kept right.

What Champlab is

Champlab (champlab.net) is a free, independent League of Legends guessing game. You find a hidden champion by guessing others and reading how their gender, position, species, resource, range type, region and release year compare — the idea behind Wordle, applied to all 173 champions on the roster. There's also a Quote game, where a single voice line is the only clue. No download, no account and no daily limit.

Who builds it

Champlab is built and run by Riupo AB (org. nr 559533-2288), a small software company in Eskilstuna, Sweden. The same small team writes the code, maintains the champion data, publishes the guides and answers the email.

Why it exists

We play League, and we liked daily champion-guessing games but kept wanting just one more round. Champlab started as an unlimited version of that idea, with difficulty modes so it stays interesting whether you've played for ten years or ten weeks. It grew from there: a Quote mode, a browsable champion list, and guides like the strategy page, whose opening-guess rankings are computed with the same code the game uses to colour your guesses.

How the data is verified

Every champion has one line in a single data file, and everything on the site — the game, the champion tables, the per-region and per-year analyses, the sitemap — is generated from it. That means a correction only has to be made once.

  • Release years are checked against the League of Legends wiki's list of champions.
  • Regions and species follow Riot's current Universe canon, with the wiki as a second source. Champions who clearly belong to two get both.
  • Resource and range come from Riot's own champion data.
  • Positions list every role a champion is regularly played in, not just their most popular one — the FAQ explains why Wukong is Top and Jungle, and how disputed cases are decided.

Player reports are part of this. When someone emails a correction with a source, we check it and, if it holds up, fix it in the next release.

Update policy for new champions

New champions are added within about a week of reaching the live servers, once their roles have settled and the wiki has their lore details. Existing entries are reviewed when Riot reworks a champion or rewrites their lore, since both can change positions, species or region. Game rules and scoring changes are announced on the how to play page.

Relationship to Riot Games

Champlab isn't endorsed by Riot Games and doesn't reflect the views or opinions of Riot Games or anyone officially involved in producing or managing Riot Games properties.
